North Macedonia: A Natural and Historical Treasure
North Macedonia is a natural paradise of mountains, lakes, and rivers, where life follows a different rhythm amidst the grandeur of historical ruins and idyllic villages that have remained practically unchanged for centuries.
With a population of 2.09 million, the majority are ethnic Macedonians and Orthodox Christians, while a significant Albanian Muslim minority also contributes to the cultural mosaic. The country boasts a unique blend of architectural and ethnic heritage, reflecting Greek, Albanian, Turkish, and Mediterranean influences. Covering an area of 25,700 square kilometers, North Macedonia is landlocked and shares borders with Serbia and Kosovo to the north, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east, and Greece to the south.
Governance and Economic Landscape
North Macedonia is a parliamentary republic and a member of the UN, WTO, and the Council of Europe. The country has applied for NATO membership and is a candidate for EU accession, with the EU Council outlining a path for opening negotiations.
The capital and largest city, Skopje, located in the north along the Vardar River, has a population of 507,000. Skopje is emerging as a modern hub for international trade, cultural events, and sports, while retaining its historic landmarks and archaeological sites.
North Macedonia’s economy has shown resilience, posting a GDP growth of 2.7%, supported by consumption and net exports. The country is well-positioned to seize opportunities following the resolution of its official name issue. Early market-oriented reforms, trade openness, and prudent macroeconomic management have created economic stability, attracting private investment and boosting exports to €5.7 billion. Key export sectors include foodstuffs, textiles, steel, and automotive parts.
Tourism in North Macedonia
Tourism in North Macedonia is still in its early stages but has shown year-on-year growth of 12.8%, with 1.13 million overnight visitors, 63% of whom were international. On average, these visitors stayed for 2.1 nights. Although data on day trips and purposes of travel are not published, only 18% of overnight stays are in the capital, Skopje, indicating significant leisure tourism activity outside urban areas.
Skopje presents a bustling cityscape, blending Hellenic heritage with a mix of architectural styles and grand neoclassical statuary. Ottoman and Byzantine landmarks highlight its rich history, while modern business hubs and cultural attractions showcase its aspirations. Global hotel brands, such as Marriott, Hilton, and Accor, add to its hospitality offerings.
However, as noted by The New York Times, “Macedonia’s best face is outside its cities.” Around 60% of tourist overnight stays occur in the scenic lake district in the southwest, with Ohrid being a key destination. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ohrid is famed for its beaches, historical monuments like Samuil’s Fortress and the Church of St. John, and vibrant cultural scene. Picturesque villages such as Trpejca and Pestani along Lake Ohrid’s coastline further enhance its appeal.
Natural Attractions
Over 70% of North Macedonia is mountainous, with three national parks and 33 nature reserves. Mavrovo National Park, the largest protected area, features three mountain ranges, 80 peaks, and 60 canyons. It is a prime destination for snow skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, and ecotourism, offering a diverse range of flora and fauna.
The country is also rich in natural thermal springs, with approximately 60 tapped for spa complexes. Popular sites like Proevce Spa near Kumanovo and Kezovica near Štip offer therapeutic treatments, rehabilitation, and recreation.
Snow skiing is gaining prominence, with eight ski resorts offering 48 kilometers of slopes. Popova Šapka, the largest resort, reaches an altitude of 2,525 meters and features 20 kilometers of ski trails.
With its rich history, cultural diversity, and stunning landscapes, North Macedonia is a rising star in tourism, offering unique experiences to travelers worldwide.
