Morocco is preparing to run for the presidency of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, in a step that supports the energy transition journey, both at the local level of the North African country, and at the African and international levels.
The Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development promoted his candidacy and reviewed his record of achievements locally, African and internationally, noting that the candidacy step comes in support of green development.
The Ministry stressed that Morocco’s candidacy for the presidency of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly indicates its sustainable commitment to environmental goals, relying on several steps to bring about development that in turn contributes to global transformation.
Morocco carries the banner of African interests
By running for the presidency of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, Morocco aims to demonstrate strong African representation at the global level, demonstrating its readiness to bear the responsibility of addressing African environmental challenges during the journey of sustainable development.
The Kingdom of Morocco plans to deploy leadership and expertise to take it upon itself to spread African interests globally, and to cooperate with other global countries to strengthen the authority of the United Nations Environment Assembly, with the aim of mobilizing international cooperation to confront the challenges of climate change, the impact of biodiversity and the spread of pollution, to reach the goals of carbon neutrality for the year 2030.
The United Nations Environment Assembly is the highest global body for environmental decision-making, and it is the governing body of the United Nations Environment Programme. It meets every two years to determine global environmental policy priorities and how to work on developing international environmental law. The Assembly includes representatives from 193 member states of the United Nations. The Kingdom played a vital role in the energy transition process, whether at the local, African or international levels as well.
Local leadership
At the local level, the Kingdom of Morocco has relied on legislation and regulations that enable it to consolidate general and sector-related policies in the field of environment and sustainable development. Among the steps it relied on to enhance its goal was the preparation of a national committee for sustainable development headed by the Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, in addition to preparing the national strategy for sustainable development that aims to move towards a green and comprehensive economy by 2030.
