Monaco – a sustainable town
The Government is fully committed to preserving the town’s quality of life and has implemented a proactive sustainable development policy.
A Proactive Policy for a Sustainable Town
As a compact town-state covering just 2 km², home to 36,000 residents, and the workplace of 50,000 employees, the Principality faces the same environmental challenges as other cities, amplified by its limited territory. To address these challenges, the Prince’s Government is leading a proactive sustainable development policy.
Mobility and Transport: Leading by Example and Supporting Behavioral Change
This ambitious policy is evident in the strong support for public transport within the Principality and beyond its borders, the implementation of adaptable traffic flow plans, and the development of automated pedestrian pathways.
Additionally, the acquisition of clean vehicles is encouraged for both individuals and businesses and is mandatory for State departments.
Sustainable Water and Waste Management
Efficient water consumption and wastewater treatment are critical components of a sustainable town. The population has also shown strong support for the recycling initiatives that have been introduced, contributing to effective waste management.
A Carefully Preserved Natural Environment
Monaco spans an area of 270,000 m², with 20% of its territory dedicated to public and private parks and gardens. The area occupied by these green spaces has grown from 50,000 to 270,000 m². These spaces are managed in an eco-responsible manner by conserving water resources, minimizing chemical treatments, and adopting organic pest control methods.
Monitoring Environmental Quality
Maintaining the quality of life is closely tied to the health of marine and land environments. The Government ensures the stability of these environments by deploying monitoring networks, including testing the quality of air and swimming waters. Additionally, noise levels in the town are controlled based on their nature and intensity.
