The Albatros Energy IPP power plant is located in Hawa-Dembaya, a commune consisting of ten villages with approximately 10,000 inhabitants.

Since its inception, the project has aimed not only to build a power plant and provide reliable, affordable electricity but also to create a positive sustainable impact on the surrounding community.

Albatros’ CSR projects are developed in close consultation with the community and its strategic development plan. The community of Hawa-Dembaya contributes manpower and provides adequate financial support for project maintenance, ensuring sustainable ownership.

Through independent case studies, interviews with CSR specialists, baseline field studies in Hawa-Dembaya, and in-depth exchanges with community members and representatives, the following pillars for Albatros’ CSR activities have been identified:

Basic Health, Maternal & Child Healthcare

Our primary goal is to improve healthcare facilities and services in Hawa-Dembaya:

• Eliminating preventable child and maternal deaths during birth
• Ambulance services for emergencies to Bamako and for transporting mothers to dispensaries
• Upgrading dispensary and maternity wards
• Regular doctor visits (minimum 3 days/week)
• Permanent employment of 3 nurses at Médine’s dispensary and maternity ward, equipped with modern facilities thanks to sponsorship from Hospital without Borders and Rotary E-club Belgium 1.
• 24/24h ambulance service provided by the Albatros power plant maintenance team, sponsored by Redox Power Solutions, Hogan Lovells, Linklaters, IFU, and BWSC.

Water & Sanitation

Our main goal is to provide clean, accessible drinking water to all residents of Hawa-Dembaya, benefiting families and particularly mothers and children tasked with finding potable water. We also aim to develop an irrigation plan to enhance food supply, create jobs, and increase income:

• Albatros has developed a Water Master Plan, resulting in the drilling of 6 new wells and rehabilitation of 12 existing ones, supported by IFU (Danish Government).
• A Water Maintenance team of five local community members has been trained to maintain manual pumps and existing wells.
• Water Management Boards for different villages ensure financial maintenance contributions from users before wells are operational.
• Regular water quality testing by an independent laboratory.

Basic Education & Training

Our goals include rehabilitating Médine’s school building, ensuring every child attends school, improving pass rates, and identifying employment opportunities:

• Request for Proposals developed with ICON for school rehabilitation.
• BWSC provides holiday school camps in natural sciences and mathematics.
• Strategic Education Plan established for children of Hawa-Dembaya to provide school books and writing tools.

Economic Development & Job Creation

Our goal is to reduce high unemployment in Hawa-Dembaya and help residents secure future employment:

• During power plant construction, priority was given to local employment with a maximum of 560 onsite workers, including 381 locals. During operations, 58 people are employed, 55 of whom are local.
• Future plans include providing 200 women with fertile, irrigated land to grow vegetables and fruits for personal use and market sale, supported by GIZ for sustainable irrigation systems on a 4-hectare plot in Hawa-Dembaya.
• Encouraging youth to propose sustainable economic projects needing startup funding.
